Boards that deliver value

Boardroom Effectiveness and Boardroom Dynamics

Professionalization of Boards that Matter

Moving boardroom dynamics forward

The New Board Program is pleased to invite members of corporate and public supervisory boards, members of managing boards, and talent pools of listed or large corporations to its corporate governance curriculum at Nyenrode Business Universiteit. The 2-year program is geared towards moving boardroom dynamics forward. To do so, it focuses on adding value to the dialogue about leadership, policy, regulation, supervision, accountability and the balance of power. The 9th cycle of this very successful program begins on November 4-5, 2010.

An unparalleled perspective for real professionalization

To be effective, corporate governance must confront a sometimes bewildering array of internal and external challenges, all of which are heightened during times of economic crisis. Now, more than ever, board members must thoroughly examine contemporary issues and develop a stronger, deeper sense of obligation and engagement – not just to the organization and the shareholders, but also to the world outside the company doors. The New Board Program prepares directors to face these challenges by bringing key management from companies and organizations together into a high-end executive program that delivers an unparalleled perspective on corporate and organizational governance. The goal is to improve boardroom dynamics and increase boardroom effectiveness, professionalizing boards so that they are truly able to add value.

A holistic approach to specific issues

Corporate governance is all about answering fundamental questions regarding economics, socio-politics, and global environments. From a holistic perspective, therefore, the dialogue includes topics such as board efficiency, remuneration, internal audits, risk management, corporate social responsibility and diversity. Naturally, all of these topics are discussed with a real emphasis on the merits of free enterprise in a larger economy, and ways in which we can sustain our values while protecting the environment. Within this larger context, managing and supervisory boards make decisions that have an impact on issues such as trust and risk – topics that receive a lot of attention during the program and that allow boards to navigate through the dangers inherent in today’s business environment.

The first step: new corporate governance

The challenge for non-executive talent is this: what is the best way to provide leadership in the midst of the growing complexity of companies in an ever changing world. And how does one create a bridge between a divided global society and a unified global economy? New corporate governance is a first step. The New Board Program brings structure, process, best practices, professionalism and value creation together as participants gain knowledge and experience in dealing with new board roles. The program is a joint-venture of A.T. Kearney and Nyenrode Business Universiteit.

The New Board Program

The New Board Program combines academic analysis, theoretical excellence and in-depth, independent best practice knowledge of the inner working of boards. It maximizes learning through an integrated mix of faculty lectures, as well as coaching and mentoring through the peer group program by senior members of our present boards. Fireside meetings are also held with experienced (non-)executives, with executive sessions and access to information and documentation in the e-portal and placement support.

The New Board Program provides the chance to broaden and deepen leadership roles as part of continuing executive development. It is the perfect next step in the post-education of executives who have already participated in advanced leadership programs.

In short, the program:

• Delivers new board potential for the 21st century;

• Improves boardroom dynamics through real life business cases;

• Connects with world-class decision makers in the New Board Business Club;

• Entitles participants to two years of PE points, acknowledged by Nivra;

• Awards a New Board Program Certificate upon completion.

New Board Program

The New Board Program (NBP) brings together key executive leaders from major companies and organizations who are ready for functioning in an Executive or non-Executive Board.

The NBP provides them with additional knowledge and experience that they can use to deal with different board roles. At the same time, the program supports senior executives in improving their future role as non-executive directors.

In this way, the program promotes executive development in two directions and at the same time fulfills society’s need for an increased number of better non-executives.

Faculty lectures provide a theoretical framework that allows participants as a team to identify relevant issues and apply them to specific corporate governance practices. The lectures are given by a core faculty of professors who are widely recognized as thought leaders and skilled educators.

The faculty staff is joined by many well known senior non-executives in the Netherlands and by executives like the former Group Director Corporate Communications of TNT and one of the former Senior Vice Presidents of Royal Philips Electronics.
